UNFINISHED ATLAS

FR

During my years in Los Angeles, I’ve photographed the creatives who have come through my house: musicians, philosophers, composers, chefs, actors, writers, film producers, standup comedians, directors, a.o. Each time, I’ve followed the same process: shooting with my polaroid camera and asking them to sit in my kitchen at golden hour, on a vintage kitchen stool.

Used both as a counter height chair or a step stool, this chair is a symbol of domestic life in the 50’s, a sign of progress and comfort at a time when wives largely stayed at home. With the dominance of the leisure class*, this era was also the height of consumerism as we know it today – over production, conspicuous consumption, and waste as a sign of success.

As we struggle to redefine the notion of success in today’s world, we move away from income bracket towards cultural capital. Reflecting on the cultural and ecological aspirations of my generation, Unfinished Atlas is an attempt at mapping the creative relationships in my life through instant film.
